HANOI, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam's sex ratio at birth remained at a high level in 2023, with 112 boys born for every 100 girls, while the natural ratio is around 105/100, according to the latest statistics of the General Statistics Office (GSO).

According to the office's recent report on population, labor and employment, Vietnam's sex ratio at birth has shown signs of slowing down in recent years and is expected to decrease in the following years, Vietnam News Agency reported Friday.

Vietnam needs to continue efforts to achieve the government's goal set out in the country's population strategy by 2030 in which the sex ratio at birth is below 109 boys for every 100 girls, said the report.

Vietnam's total fertility rate in 2023 was estimated at 1.96 children per woman, lower than the average rate of Southeast Asian countries (two children per woman).

According to the GSO, Vietnam's population in 2023 reached 100.3 million people, of which the male and female population ratio was quite balanced with 49.9 percent of men and 50.1 percent of women.

Vietnam is the third most populous country in Southeast Asia after Indonesia and the Philippines.

Vietnam's population structure has witnessed an increasing proportion of elderly people and a decreasing proportion of young people, currently experiencing population aging, according to the report. Enditem
