NEW DELHI, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Incessant rain has disrupted normal life in several parts of India's southern state of Tamil Nadu, forcing the local administration to shut educational institutions and government offices, a state government official confirmed to Xinhua on Monday.

For the past three days, heavy rain hit various districts in the area. Schools, colleges and some government offices in these districts have declared a holiday for Monday, as water logging was reported on a large scale.

According to the state government official, the Nagapattinam district received rainfall of 16.7 cm during the past 24 hours, Karaikal received 12.2 cm of rainfall.

A report by "India Today" stated that in the state's capital city of Chennai the traffic moved at a snail's pace as daily commuters faced long traffic-jams on Sunday evening.

The India Meteorological Department said in a forecast that more rain was expected for the next seven days in various districts in Tamil Nadu. Enditem
