TOKYO -- The death toll has climbed to 168 in Japan's Ishikawa on Monday after a series of earthquakes of up to 7.6 magnitude struck the central prefecture and its vicinity last week, as heavy snow and rain have hampered rescue operations.

The number of people currently unaccounted for surged to 323 in the hardest-hit prefecture as of 2 p.m. local time, while at least 565 people suffered injuries due to the quakes, according to local authorities. (Japan-Quake-Death Toll)

YANGON -- The Shwedagon Pagoda also known as the golden pagoda in Myanmar attracted over 10 million visitors including nearly 80,000 foreign visitors in 2023, U Boe Thin, a member of the Shwedagon Pagoda Board of Trustees told Xinhua on Monday.

KABUL -- The death toll of a blast that ripped through a mini-bus in the Afghan capital Kabul city on Saturday has risen to five, a local television channel Tolonews reported Monday.

DHAKA -- The ruling Bangladeshi Awami League (AL) party led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has won 223 out of 298 seats in the country's parliamentary elections, according to the Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal on Monday.

KATHMANDU -- The Nepali government on Monday confirmed the presence of a new coronavirus subvariant JN.1 in the South Asian country.

The JN.1 strain was found in seven out of 16 coronavirus positive samples taken from people of different ages for examination through the gene sequencing method, the Ministry of Health and Population said in a press statement.

"It is the first time that the presence of the JN.1 strain was confirmed in Nepal," the ministry said. (Nepal-JN.1 Strain) Enditem
