Mixed results for Chinese shuttlers in Malaysia Open quarterfinals

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese shuttlers had mixed fortunes in the Malaysia Open quarterfinals on Friday, advancing in all categories while also seeing several players eliminated.

Men's singles seventh seed Shi Yuqi outplayed his compatriot Lu Guangzu 8-21, 21-11, 21-10 to advance to the final four.

In the women's singles quarterfinals, Olympic champion Chen Yufei beat Indonesia's Gregoria Mariska Tunjung 21-13, 21-17, while fellow Chinese shuttler Zhang Yiman overpowered Akane Yamaguchi of Japan 12-21, 21-17, 21-17.

Men's doubles pair Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang pulled off a 16-21, 21-17, 21-18 win against Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto of Indonesia.

Women's doubles duo Zhang Shuxian and Zheng Yu overpowered Rena Miyaura and Ayako Sakuramoto of Japan 21-17, 21-15, while Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning also progressed to the semifinals with a 21-12, 17-21, 21-10 victory over their top-seeded teammates Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan.

In the mixed doubles, Jiang Zhenbang and Wei Yaxin outgunned South Korea's Seo Seung-Jae and Chae Yu-jung 21-19, 21-14.

Among the Chinese players who failed to make the cut are women's singles shuttler He Bingjiao, who lost to Tai Tzu-ying of Chinese Taipei 21-16, 21-15, and men's singles third seed Li Shifeng, who fell 21-12, 21-18 to Lin Chun-yi of Chinese Taipei.

Mixed doubles top seeds Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong were defeated by South Korean duo Kim Won-ho and Jeong Na-eun 21-11, 18-21, 21-17. Women's doubles duo Li Wenmei and Liu Xuanxuan crashed out following a 21-13, 21-14 loss to South Korea's Baek Ha-na and Lee So-hee, while men's doubles pair Ren Xiangyu and He Jiting were also eliminated by India's Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty 21-11, 21-8.
