OTTAWA, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- A final agreement on transferring responsibilities for public land and natural resources from the Canadian federal government to the Nunavut government was signed in the territory's capital city Iqaluit Thursday afternoon.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and officials from Nunavut signed the "Nunavut Lands and Resources Devolution Agreement," which will see transferring responsibilities for 2 million square km of land and resources.
Nunavut, the largest and northernmost territory of Canada, was separate from the Northwest Territories and became a territory in 1999, making up one-fifth of the country's land mass.
Nunavut's negotiation process began in 2008 and the territory signed an agreement-in-principle with the federal government in 2019. The federal government has gradually transferred responsibility for things like health, education, social services and housing to the territory since the 1960s. Enditem
