GANGNEUNG, South Korea, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- The mixed-gender events have replaced the mixed-NOC ones at the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games.

In previous Youth Olympics, athletes from different countries and regions teamed up to compete together for the mixed National Olympic Committee (NOC) events, which have been replaced with mixed-gender ones in Nordic combined, cross-country skiing, biathlon, short track, ski jumping, Alpine skiing and freestyle skiing at Gangwon 2024.

The decision was made as the International Olympic Committee hoped that mixed-gender disciplines would help place greater focus on young athlete development pathways and ensure consistency with the Summer Youth Olympic Games program in 2026.

The mixed-NOC events were first introduced at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics and made their winter debut two years later as non-medal events in curling, figure skating and short track speed skating.

The fourth Winter Youth Olympics, scheduled from Jan. 19 to Feb. 1, featured seven sports, 15 disciplines and 81 events, composed of 32 women's and 32 men's events in addition to 17 mixed events. Enditem
