NEW DELHI, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- Twelve people were killed Thursday in a collision between an autorickshaw and a speeding container truck in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said.
The accident took place in Allahganj area, about 182 km northwest of Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh.
"Today late morning, an autorickshaw carrying passengers collided with a container truck ... killing 12 people. The deceased were identified as eight men, three women and one child," a senior police official Ashok Kumar Meena said.
The accident is attributed to low visibility caused by dense fog that engulfed the area in the morning.
Police have registered a case and ordered an investigation to ascertain the cause of the accident. The container truck has been seized, but its driver managed to escape.
"A police team has been formed to arrest the truck driver," the police official said.
Deadly road accidents are common in India due to overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving. Around 150,000 people are killed every year in about half a million road accidents across India, officials said. Enditem
