TEHRAN, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- Iranian border guards have smashed a "terrorist" group following an armed clash with its members in Sistan and Baluchestan province near the border with Pakistan, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported on Monday.

One member of the "terrorist" group was killed and two others escaped after sustaining injuries during an exchange of fire with Iranian border guards in Jakigur border village in Rask County, Tasnim quoted Iran's Border Guards Commander Ahmad Ali Goudarzi as saying on Monday, without specifying the date of the clash.

He added during their search for the two injured "terrorists," the border guards found the body of the one killed during the clash, along with six grenades and an explosive vest, in nearby reed beds.

Goudarzi noted that over the past few days, the "terrorist" group had sought to enter the country to perpetrate "acts of sabotage" while carrying "significant" amounts of weapons, ammunition, detonating cords, pipe bombs, explosive equipment and booby traps as well as a rocket-propelled grenade.

He added the Iranian border guards, as well as the country's other armed forces, prevented the "terrorists" from entering the country in a "heroic" confrontation that involved a heavy exchange of fire.

Bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan, Sistan and Baluchestan province has witnessed several terrorist attacks on both civilians and security forces over the past years.

On Dec. 15, 2023, 11 policemen were killed and seven others injured in an attack on a police headquarters in Rask County, for which the Jaish al-Zulm "terrorist" group claimed responsibility. Enditem
