JERUSALEM, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- 6,600 athletes competed in the annual Dead Sea Marathon events on Friday, which took place along the southern shores of the salt lake in southeastern Israel, known as the lowest spot on earth.

The marathon, organized by the Tamar Regional Council, featured a running section towards the center of the lake along the border embankment between Israel and Jordan.

Normally restricted to security forces and authorized personnel, this section becomes accessible to the public only once a year on the day of the marathon.

Hagai Cohen-Shlomo, representing Israel, came in first in the men's full marathon with a time of two hours, 41 minutes, and 26 seconds, while Liz Shapiro, also of Israel, secured victory in the women's marathon, completing the race in 3:08:05.

The event also included other race categories, including half marathon, 50km, 10km, and 5km races. Enditem
