WINDHOEK, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- Namibia's Minister of Mines and Energy Tom Alweendo on Monday underscored the vital importance of communicating to potential investors that the country's commitment to adding value to its minerals is crucial for economic growth.

In a statement announcing the country's participation at the upcoming Invest in Africa Mining Indaba scheduled in Cape Town, South Africa, Monday evening, Alweendo highlighted the need to strengthen the country's dedication to sustainable mining practices in response to the growing global demand for critical minerals.

He emphasized that the mining Indaba would allow Namibia to showcase its potential and learn from other mining nations about the best regional and global practices.

"It is imperative that we create the understanding with our potential investment partners that Namibia's steadfast position on value addition to our minerals is crucial to the growth of the Namibian economy. To achieve a green tomorrow, we need to strengthen our commitment to sustainable mining practices, with the heightened global demand for critical minerals," he said.

Namibia's diverse mineral resources, including diamonds, gold, copper, zinc, uranium, rare earth elements, and industrial minerals, coupled with a conducive policy environment, have positioned the nation as an attractive destination for mining investments.

The country's mining sector played a pivotal role, contributing about 12.2 percent to the country's gross domestic product in 2022.

As part of the Indaba, Namibia will host business-to-business and business-to-government meetings, along with a country showcase panel discussion on Feb. 7.

The discussion will revolve around "Critical raw materials development and local value addition in the Namibian context." This flagship event aims to provide insights into Namibia's plans to develop and implement the national mining and processing of critical raw materials.

Key national entities of Namibia, including the Geological Survey of Namibia, Epangelo Mining, NamPower, Chamber of Mines, and Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board, will present at the country showcase. Enditem
