NEW DELHI, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- Five people went missing after a boat carrying them capsized in a river in India's eastern state of West Bengal, police said Friday.

The boat carrying 19 people capsized Thursday night in the Rupnarayan river in Howrah district, police said.

According to police, the people on the boat had gone to Tribeni Park in Paschim Medinipur district for a picnic and were returning when it capsized in the middle of the river.

"We received information that a boat carrying people capsized in the river last night, following which other boats rushed to the spot after hearing the screams and cries for help," a police official said. "From the ill-fated boat, 14 people were rescued and five could not be traced despite searches."

Authorities also rushed disaster management personnel to the spot to carry out rescue work.

The search resumed Friday morning again and was going on until the last reports poured in. Enditem
