YANGON, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- Fifteen people were killed and 37 others injured in 18 road accidents on Myanmar's Yangon-Mandalay expressway in January this year, Deputy Sheriff of Highway Police Office Myo Lin Thant told Xinhua on Tuesday.

According to the deputy sheriff, the figures were up compared to 8 killed and 13 injured in 13 accidents recorded in the same period last year.

Human error, such as reckless driving and speeding, is the main cause of highway accidents in the Southeast Asian country, Myo Lin Thant said.

Inaugurated in December 2010, the 587-km Yangon-Mandalay expressway is the busiest highway in Myanmar, connecting the country's commercial city Yangon and second largest city Mandalay.

In 2023, 86 people were killed and 326 injured in 163 road accidents on the Yangon-Mandalay expressway. Enditem
