MADRID, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- The five-day Vuelta a Andalucia (Tour of Andalucia) cycle race is in danger of being suspended due to a strike of agricultural workers which is currently affecting Spain.

The first stage of the 70th edition of one of the most important early-season races in the calendar was meant to be held over 162 kilometers between the localities of Almunecar and Cadiz, was cancelled on Wednesday morning, just hours before it was due to start.

The reason given by race organizers is there are not enough Civil Guards to guarantee the security of the riders as they are occupied in trying to avoid incidents related to the strike.

"The motive for the suspension is the lack of coverage and the lack of Civil Guards, who have had to go to their regions. We have around 100 (Civil Guards) to cover the race and they cannot guarantee its progress," explained race director, Joaquin Cuevas in a TV interview.

Race organizers are now looking for a way to guarantee the remaining four stages of the race, which plays a major role in the preparation of riders such as Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates), Wouter Poels and Jack Haig (Bahrain Victorious), Lawson Craddock (Team Jayco Alula). Enditem
