BAGHDAD, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- The Iraqi judicial authorities announced Thursday that the family members of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the former leader of the terrorist group Islamic State (IS) killed in Syria in 2019, had been repatriated to Iraq for investigation.
The Iraqi Judiciary Council said in a statement that the repatriation of the al-Baghdadi family members came within a plan to repatriate those involved with terrorist charges for investigation, without revealing the name of the country from which they were brought back to Iraq.
The statement added that a Baghdad court began recording the testimonies of al-Baghdadi's family members and investigating them.
In 2019, the U.S. forces conducted a raid targeting al-Baghdadi in Syria's northern province of Idlib, killing the IS leader.
Al-Baghdadi, whose real name is Ibrahim Awad al-Badri, established the so-called Islamic State in 2014. The extremist militant group, which once captured large swathes of land in western and northern Iraq as well as parts of neighboring Syria, was defeated in late 2017. Enditem
