ADEN, Yemen, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- Three soldiers from the Yemeni government forces were killed on Friday following a Houthi attack on a border area in the country's northern province of Saada, a military official told Xinhua.

The Houthi members launched a major offensive using various weapons on several military sites belonging to pro-government troops in the Baqim border district, the local military official said on condition of anonymity.

The source confirmed that the attack left three soldiers killed and three others seriously wounded. Fierce clashes followed the assault and continued for several hours before government forces were able to repel a Houthi advance on some military positions.

Brigadier General Suleiman Nuwahi, commander of the 3rd Brigade of the government border guard troops, said in a statement carried by the state-run Saba news agency that national army troops foiled the Houthi attack on sites in Baqim, inflicting heavy losses.

Nuwahi said the Houthis used mortars, artillery shells, and other weapons in the attack.

He said the attack was part of repeated Houthi attacks along the front, aimed at derailing peace efforts in Yemen.

Pro-government military units and border guard brigades are deployed in parts of Baqim near the border with Saudi Arabia, while the Houthis have controlled large swathes of the district for over nine years.

Most fronts in Yemen's civil war have seen a decline in fighting since a United Nations-brokered truce between the government and rebels took effect in April 2022.

The truce ended in October 2022, but military operations have remained largely frozen in many areas, barring some skirmishes and sporadic shelling. Enditem
