VIENTIANE, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- The Lao government has approved the development of a 1,200 MW wind power project, which will be the largest of its kind in Laos and a milestone in the country's journey toward clean energy and sustainable development.

The Lao government signed an agreement with Savan Vayu Renewable Energy Co., Ltd. (SVARE) last Wednesday for the development of the project in Savannakhet province, some 400 km south of the Lao capital Vientiane, Lao News Agency reported on Tuesday.

Under the agreement, Laos will have its largest wind farm to date, which is expected to generate sufficient electricity to meet Laos' energy needs and contribute to the region's energy security.

The project is expected to be a major boost for renewable energy in Southeast Asia as it is located near Laos-Vietnam border. Enditem
