ABUJA, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- At least six people were killed and 10 others sustained injuries in an attack by gunmen in a village in Nigeria's northern state of Katsina, police said Tuesday.

The gunmen stormed the village of Nasarawa in the Faskari local government area of Katsina State late Monday with heavy arms, including AK-47 rifles, said Abubakar Aliyu, the spokesperson for the police in the state, in a statement.

"In total, six people were shot dead and about 10 injured. The gunmen also set ablaze three houses and about 10 motor vehicles," said the statement, noting that most residents had already settled down for night rest at the time of the attack.

The village has been cordoned off by a team of police personnel deployed to comb the surrounding bushes for the possible arrest of the perpetrators for diligent prosecution, read the statement.

Armed attacks have been a primary security threat in Nigeria's northern and central regions, leading to deaths and kidnappings in recent months. Enditem
