STOCKHOLM, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- The number of newborns in Sweden last year hit a two-decade low, contributing to the slowest population growth since 2021, Swedish Television (SVT) reported on Friday.
"The number of births in 2023 was the lowest since 2003, but then the population was also nearly 1.6 million smaller than today," Ann-Marie Persson, a population statistician at Statistics Sweden, said in a press release.
The total fertility rate in 2023 fell to 1,449 children per 1,000 women, the lowest since Sweden started measuring in 1749, according to the government's statistics agency.
Changing migration patterns also contributed to the slow population growth last year as immigration fell while emigration increased, SVT reported.
In 2023, 94,500 individuals immigrated to Sweden, down by 7,900 from 2022, while emigration increased by 22,800 to 73,400, SVT reported.
At the end of 2023, Sweden had a population of 10,551,700, an increase of 30,200 from the previous year, SVT reported. Enditem
