KABUL, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- A total of 2.2 billion afghani (about 300 million USD) has been allocated to develop agriculture sector in war-torn Afghanistan, the Ministry for Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock said Sunday.

The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by Mawlawi Attaullah Omari, the acting minister for agriculture, irrigation and livestock, as part of efforts to develop agriculture in the impoverished country.

The decision was taken in the ninth session of the Agricultural Development Fund (ADF), a government-owned financial institution supporting farmers, animal husbandry and agribusinesses to enhance agricultural products in the country.

In Afghanistan, nearly 16 million people are facing food insecurity, according to aid agencies.

Afghanistan reportedly needs 6.5 million tons of wheat annually and the country has harvested 5 million tons of wheat so far this year. Enditem
