LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- Units of counter-narcotics police have destroyed five drug processing labs in the Bahramcha district of south Afghanistan's Helmand province and detained six alleged drug smugglers, said a statement of the Provincial Directorate for Information and Culture on Tuesday.

Citing provincial police spokesman Mullah Ezatullah Haqqani, the statement added that the intelligence-based operations were launched on Monday when police discovered and smashed five drug processing labs. Over one ton of illicit drugs was also found.

Six people were arrested for the involvement in the drug business, the statement said.

The Afghan caretaker government banned poppy cultivation, its processing to drug and drug trafficking in April 2022, and since then, the administration has been fighting to eliminate the drug menace in the once poppy-growing country. Enditem
