KUNDUZ, Afghanistan, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Nearly 12,000 returned refugee families have settled in north Afghanistan's Kunduz province in the past year, provincial head of refugees and repatriation affairs department Mawlawi Abdul Wali Mohammadi said.
"About 12,000 families have settled in Kunduz over the past one year. The former refugees returned from different countries with the majority of them back from Pakistan," Mohammadi told reporters.
The local authorities in coordination with aid agencies have provided assistance including cash, food and clothes to 2,000 families, the official said, adding efforts are being made to provide more supplies and land for the returnees to construct houses.
Nearly 1 million Afghan refugees returned over the past year with the majority of them back from neighboring Pakistan and Iran.
The Afghan caretaker government has encouraged Afghans refugees living abroad to return home and contribute to the rebuilding of their motherland. Enditem
