MOGADISHU, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on Wednesday launched a peace initiative aimed at fostering dialogue and reconciliation as part of efforts to foster unity in the country.

Abdi, who launched the initiative dubbed the Principles of Peace, in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, stressed the government's firm commitment to fostering security and stability in the country.

He said under the current administration, significant security strides have been realized towards achieving lasting peace in the country.

"The world is concerned about the continuation of peace, which makes it important to find solid rules to control everyone who disrupts world peace," he said in a ceremony which was attended by local and international organizations that backed the initiative.

Abdi noted that Somalia is on the path of peace, development, and recovery, noting that it's important to strengthen government institutions so that the citizens can get the services they need for lasting peace.

He said the ongoing military operations across the country against al-Shabab militants were a search for sustainable peace and called on the youth who have been led astray by terrorism to return to the right path and give up extremism.

The prime minister called on the different sections of the Somali community to work for peace and social integration and avoid anything that could jeopardize peace in the country.

He said that the government is committed to peaceful coexistence with its neighbors but noted that Mogadishu will not accept any violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Enditem
