ISTANBUL, Feb. 29 (Xinhua) -- A thick blanket of fog on Thursday cloaked Türkiye's largest city, Istanbul, lowering visibility and disrupting air, sea, and land traffic.

The ship traffic in the Bosphorus Strait, one of the busiest waterways in the world, connecting the Black Sea with the Marmara Sea, has been temporarily suspended in both directions, local authorities announced.

Ferry services between the Asian and European sides of the city were canceled, resulting in a surge in road traffic density.

Flights at Sabiha Gokcen Airport, situated on the Asian side, encountered significant disruptions due to dense fog, with aircraft facing fuel constraints redirected to nearby airports, according to Haberturk Daily.

On Wednesday, the Meteorological Emergency Committee declared that flights at Sabiha Gokcen Airport would be decreased by 10 percent until 1 p.m. local time (1000 GMT) on Thursday due to the prevailing weather conditions.

According to weather forecasts, the fog and hazy weather affecting the city of 16 million people since Wednesday is expected to continue for two days. Enditem
