BAGHDAD, Feb. 29 (Xinhua) -- Two Yazidi militiamen affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) were killed in a Turkish drone strike Thursday in northern Iraq, the Kurdistan Regional Government's Counter-Terrorism Service said.
A Turkish drone struck a vehicle carrying members of the Sinjar Resistance Units (YBS) southwest of the town of Sinjar around 1:20 p.m. local time (1020 GMT), killing a YBS official and a militia member, and wounding another, according to a statement from the counter-terrorism service.
The YBS, a militia founded in 2007 by members of the Yazidi community, a Kurdish-speaking religious minority, has been maintaining close ties with the PKK.
Turkish security forces frequently conduct cross-border operations in northern Iraq, targeting PKK hideouts and bases. The PKK, designated a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the U.S., and the EU, has waged an insurgency against the Turkish government for over three decades. Enditem
