BERLIN, March 2 (Xinhua) -- Borussia Dortmund cemented their fourth place in the standings after returning to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Union Berlin at the 24th round of Bundesliga on Saturday.

The capital club caught a promising start in front of home crowd as Lucas Tousart came close from tight angle with six minutes played.

Union dominated possession, and Dortmund needed some time to grow into the game.

The BVB turned up as the match progressed and nearly opened the scoring with 35 minutes gone after Nico Schlotterbeck's effort from three meters forced Union goalkeeper Frederik Ronnow into action.

Ronnow remained busy and had to be on guard again three minutes later when Ian Maatsen unleashed a deflected shot on target.

Union's custodian was hapless though in the 41st minute when Karim Adeyemi's well-placed shot from the edge of the box made it 1-0.

After the restart, both sides traded attacks. Ronnow denied Niclas Fullkrug in the 52nd minute and Kevin Volland's long-range hammer got defused by Dortmund keeper Alexander Meyer with a diving safe four minutes later.

Dortmund controlled the proceedings on the pitch and kept the Eisernen on the distance.

Edin Terzic's men eventually put the result beyond doubt in the closing stage as Maatsen dispossessed Josip Juranovic with a solo run to double the lead.

"We are very satisfied. From the 30th minute on, we created good opportunities. The first goal was outstanding. The second goal was purely an effort of will. Not many teams win at Union, so we are very happy today," commented Terzic.

With the result, Dortmund increase their chances for a top-four finish while Union stay on the 14th spot.

Elsewhere, third placed Stuttgart eased 3-2 past struggling Wolfsburg by courtesy of Serhou Guirassy's brace. Leipzig bounced back from one goal down and crushed Bochum 4-1. Eintracht Frankfurt snapped their winless run of six game after overpowering Heidenheim 2-1. Augsburg trashed last placed Darmstadt 6-0 while Mainz played out a 1-1 stalemate with Borussia Monchengladbach. Enditem
