MWANZA, Tanzania, March 3 (Xinhua) -- At least 19 people were killed by crocodiles and 20 others lost their limbs in the last five years in Sengerema district in Mwanza region on Tanzania's southern shores of Lake Victoria, an official said Sunday.

Paul Poncian, the Sengerema district wildlife official, said 20 people lost their limbs after they were attacked by the crocodiles between January 2019 and December 2023.

"Fishermen were most of the victims of the crocodiles' attacks in the lake," said Poncian.

He mentioned other victims as swimmers and people who collected water from Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa and the main reservoir of the Nile River.

Lolruck Mosses, a senior wildlife official with the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA), said the authority has launched a campaign aimed at creating awareness among residents close to the lake to avoid attacks by the crocodiles. Enditem
