WINDHOEK, March 4 (Xinhua) -- Namibia needs to achieve a transformative shift from old fossil fuel technologies to a modern economy that prioritizes environmental repair and provides opportunities for all, a senior official said Monday.

Speaking at the launch of the country's Sustainable Development Awards in Windhoek, the Namibian capital, Namibia's Minister of Environment, Forestry and Tourism Pohamba Shifeta called for collective action from governments, institutions, businesses and civil society to accelerate change towards a prosperous and sustainable world.

He highlighted the importance of reducing carbon footprint, protecting biodiversity and investing in green infrastructure, underscoring the significance of investing in nature through bold and prompt action to address environmental crises linked to climate change.

"Investing in nature means more than financial commitments; it is about bold and prompt action. From green infrastructure to reframing conversations, we must converge efforts to address environmental crises linked to climate change. As stewards of this planet, we have the momentum to build resilience for a future of sustainable, inclusive growth," he said.

Namibia has been actively engaged in promoting sustainability and environmental conservation for several decades. The country faces numerous environmental challenges, including desertification, water scarcity and wildlife conservation issues, which have spurred efforts toward sustainability.

The awards aim to recognize outstanding contributions to sustainability and are organized by the Environmental Investment Fund of Namibia and the Sustainable Development Advisory Council of Namibia. Enditem
