JOHANNESBURG, March 5 (Xinhua) -- The Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), which owns and operates the country's nine principal airports, has allocated more than 21 billion rands (about 1.12 billion U.S. dollars) for airport infrastructure development over the next five years, Minister of Transport Sindisiwe Chikunga said Tuesday.

"This investment primarily targets refurbishment, efficiency improvements and statutory compliance measures, with the aim of enhancing asset availability, airport safety and passenger experiences across our airports," Chikunga said at a media briefing on the state of South Africa's aviation sector.

ACSA is set to embark on the development of a new cargo terminal at O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, she added.

Infrastructure expansion will also be implemented at the country's other airports, including those in Durban, George, Cape Town and Gqeberha, to enhance the airports' capacity and effectiveness, according to Chikunga.

"After a period of turbulence and uncertainty regarding the full extent of the pandemic's social and economic impact, I am pleased to confirm that the worst is over and our aviation sector's recovery is on a positive trajectory," Chikunga said. Enditem
