LUSAKA, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Zambia's power utility on Thursday said it would commence an eight-hour daily power cut due to low water levels necessitated by the drought.

Zesco Limited said it will announce its planned load management schedule starting Monday as one of the measures to mitigate the power deficit.

"This decision comes after careful consideration of the current national energy situation which shows a serious power deficit caused by low water levels," Victor Mapani, the company's managing director, told reporters during a press briefing.

While acknowledging the negative effect the decision will have on its customers, Mapani said the power utility was committed to working diligently to address the challenges and restore normalcy to the power supply "as soon as possible."

According to him, the power utility will reconsider export bilateral agreements and continue to import from Mozambique. Enditem
