SINGAPORE, March 8 (Xinhua) -- Singapore's port operator PSA on Friday launched the expansion of its Jurong Island Terminal to provide resilient and efficient supply chain for energy and chemical enterprises on the island.

The expansion will be completed by 2025, enabling the terminal to handle 300,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containers annually, according to a PSA statement.

Jurong Island hosts over 100 companies carrying out refining, olefins production, and chemical manufacturing. Barging raw materials and finished products can reduce 30 percent of carbon emissions compared to truck carriage, PSA added.

The terminal handled a record-breaking 149,000 TEUs of containers last year, up 13 percent from 2022.

The expansion works will support Jurong Island's transformation into a sustainable energy and chemicals hub in line with the Singapore Green Plan 2030, PSA noted. Enditem
