Adams wins 2023 IOC Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Champions Award

GENEVA, March 8 (Xinhua) -- Former American tennis player Katrina Adams was announced Friday as the Global Winner of the International Olympic Committee (IOC)'s 2023 Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (GEDI) Champions Award.

IOC celebrated the International Women's Day on Friday to award Adams and other continental winners who are working tirelessly on advancing gender equality, diversity and inclusion in sport.

Irene Limika of Kenya, Marialoreto Gonzalez Jaque of Chile, Jayanthi Kuru-Utumpala of Sri Lanka, Aurelie Bresson of France and Patrick Johnson of Australia are the continental winners.

As Chair of the US Open from 2015-2018, Adams, Chief Executive Officer, Chairperson and President of the United States Tennis Association (USTA), launched the Hispanic initiative, which led to a 15 percent growth in the number of Latino tennis players in America.

She also promoted the Advantage All initiative when she was the Vice-President of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) in 2015-2023. With the gender-balanced programs, Adams introduced the Women's Leadership Program, balanced men's and women's events on the World Tennis Tour, equaled prize money, and achieved gender parity on the Board of Directors, IOC introduced.
