BEIRUT/JERUSALEM, March 12 (Xinhua) -- Two Hezbollah fighters were killed in the past 24 hours in Israeli raids targeting areas in eastern and southern Lebanon, Lebanese military sources told Xinhua.

The sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Israeli warplanes carried out eight airstrikes overnight into Tuesday, targeting the village of Aita al-Shaab in southern Lebanon and the city of Baalbek in eastern Lebanon.

They added that members of the Civil Defense, the Lebanese Red Cross, and the Islamic Health Authority rushed to the scene with several bulldozers and cranes, working to remove the rubble and transport the injured to hospitals.

The sources noted that several teams were still working to remove the debris from one of the destroyed buildings near the Dar Al Amal University Hospital in the vicinity of Baalbek.

According to the sources, about 100 surface-to-surface missiles were launched Tuesday morning from southern Lebanon toward northern Israel, and some of them were intercepted by the Israeli Iron Dome.

In addition, four drones crossed the border of Lebanon into the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights, the sources added.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military confirmed that its warplanes carried out airstrikes in Baalbek, deep inside Lebanon, on Tuesday, saying the attack was "a response to some 100 rockets fired earlier by Hezbollah at northern Israel," referring to salvos toward the Upper Galilee area and the Golan Heights.

"The IDF (Israel Defense Forces) fighter jets struck two Hezbollah military command centers in the area of Baalbek," the Israeli military said in a statement, adding, "Hezbollah used these sites to store significant assets for strengthening its weapons arsenal."

Also on Tuesday, the Israeli army struck a military compound in the southeastern Lebanese village of Khiam and an infrastructure in the southern Lebanese town of Bint Jbeil.

The Lebanon-Israel border has been witnessing increased tension since Oct. 8, 2023, after Lebanese armed group Hezbollah fired dozens of rockets toward Israel in support of the Hamas attack on Israel the previous day, prompting Israel to respond by firing heavy artillery toward southeastern Lebanon.

The confrontations between Hezbollah and Israel have killed 357 people on the Lebanese side, including 236 Hezbollah members and 70 civilians, according to Lebanese security sources. Enditem
