JAKARTA, March 12 (Xinhua) -- Two fishermen were killed and 24 others went missing after their ship sank in the waters off South Sulawesi province in central Indonesia, an official said on Tuesday.

The ship was hit by huge waves while sailing at the water off Selayar islands of the province on Saturday, yet the incident was found out by the residents of the islands where the victims were stranded at 19:00 p.m. local time Tuesday, said Muhammad Nursal, a press officer at the provincial search and rescue office.

"A search and rescue operation has been immediately carried out. Our team is heading to the scene now," he told Xinhua via phone.

The fishing ship with 37 people on board departed from Jakarta in western Indonesia with the destination to the waters off central Indonesia, according to him.

13 people are stranded on the Selayar islands, 2 of whom are dead," Nursal said.
