WINDHOEK, March 13 (Xinhua) -- Namibia's population has grown to 3,022,401, with 1,548,177 females and 1,474,224 males, according to a preliminary report on a 2023 census released Wednesday.
The new record was 909,324 more than the 2.1 million registered in 2011, representing an annual growth rate of about 3 percent, the highest since independence in 1990, Statistitian-General Alex Shimuafeni said in the report on last year's Population and Housing Census.
The final results of the census will be released in October.
The annual population growth rate in 2011-2023 was double that of 2001-2011's rate of 1.4 percent, Shimuafeni said. "At this rate, by the year 2050, the population of Namibia would be over 6 million, all things being equal."
According to the head of the Namibia Statistics Agency, Khomas remains the most populous region in Namibia, with a population of 494,729 people, followed by Ohangwena region, with 337,729 people.
"These two regions are respectively four and three times bigger than the size of the least populous region, the Omaheke region. Omusati is the third most populous region, with a population count of 326,671 people," Shimuafeni said.
He added the national population density in the 2023 Population and Housing Census is 3.7 persons per square kilometer.
The 2023 census, conducted from Sept. 18 to Nov. 3, was originally scheduled to happen in 2021 but was postponed twice. Enditem
