MADRID, March 13 (Xinhua) -- Gaizka Garitano became the latest La Liga coach to lose the job on Wednesday when he was sacked by bottom of the table Almeria, with Pepe Mel named as his replacement.

Garitano was sacked following Monday night's 2-2 draw at home to Sevilla in which his side came close to ending a run of 27 games without a win, only to end up needing a 95th minute goal to save a point.

The result left Almeria 14 points from safety, with 10 draws and 18 defeats from 28 games this season, with Garitano's 18 matches in charge (seven draws and 11 defeats).

His only win as Almeria coach came in the first round of the Copa del Rey knockout competition when they beat lower league Talavera 2-0, but they lost in the next round 1-0 to UD Barbastro, who currently play in the fourth tier RFEF II.

Almeria's performances have improved since Garitano's appointment last October, with recent draws against Atletico Madrid, Athletic Club, Granada and Sevilla and a controversial 3-2 defeat away to Real Madrid, but a first win of the season remains elusive.
