NEW DELHI -- The Indian navy seized a cargo vessel hijacked by Somali pirates and rescued 17 crew members after forcing 35 pirates to surrender, the navy said Sunday.

Using coordinated tactical maneuvers and aerial support from HALE RPA, P8I, and MARCOS PRAHARs, the Indian navy forced the 35 pirates to surrender without resistance on Friday, a navy spokesman said, adding that the vessel was subsequently sanitized for any potential illegal arms, ammunition, or contraband. KANDAHAR, Afghanistan -- At least 21 commuters were killed and 11 others injured in a road accident in south Afghanistan's Helmand province on Sunday, spokesman for provincial government Mawlawi Mohammad Qasim Riaz said.

The deadly accident took place on a road in Gereshk district early Sunday morning when a Herat-bound passenger bus collided with a tanker and a motorbike. The bus overturned and caught fire, leaving 21 dead on the spot, the official said, adding the reason for the crash could be reckless driving. (Afghanistan-Road Accident)

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN -- Brunei held a ceremony on Saturday to celebrate the harvest of a Chinese hybrid rice experimental field, according to the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT) of Brunei.

The ceremony was held at Lekiun Agricultural Development Area where a variety of rice for non-irrigation paddy farms was harvested. The seedlings of three rice varieties were planted on Dec. 14 last year as part of a suitability study to develop the local paddy industry using high-yielding hybrids from China, local daily Borneo Bulletin reported on Sunday. COLOMBO -- Sri Lanka's navy arrested 21 Indian fishermen who were poaching in the country's territorial waters on Saturday night, the navy said in a statement on Sunday.

The arrests were made during a special operation to chase away Indian trawlers poaching near the Delft island in northern Sri Lanka, and the navy also seized two trawlers that the Indians were traveling in, the statement said. (Sri Lanka-Indian Fishermen-Poaching) Enditem
