HAVANA, March 17 (Xinhua) -- Cuba-based Latin American news agency Prensa Latina on Sunday said its YouTube channel Prensa Latina TV was the target of a cyber attack.

According to a statement from the agency's headquarters in Havana, the attack occurred on Saturday when the email account associated with the channel was "hacked" and its passwords were changed to prevent access.

The president of Prensa Latina, Luis Enrique Gonzalez, told Xinhua the cyber attack aims to silence the agency on digital platforms.

"It is an attack against the truth championed by Prensa Latina for almost 65 years," said Gonzalez, referring to the agency's role since its founding.

Prensa Latina's YouTube channel was opened in 2012 and had garnered 64,500 subscribers. It saw dynamic growth last year, accumulating more than 9.6 million views, according to the agency.

Several Cuban media outlets on Sunday reported about the cyber attack.

Prensa Latina's statement said it hopes Google "investigates what happened and adopts the necessary measures" to recover the channel "attacked in violation of the most basic rules of Internet operation." Enditem
