ACCRA, March 18 (Xinhua) -- Many football fans in Ghana said here Monday that they expect more effective efforts from the country's new national team head coach Otto Addo to transform the side's fortunes.

According to the fans, the Black Stars have failed in recent years to bring joy to their supporters, and many have urged the new coach to build a winning team.

33-year-old football fan Desmond Awudi told Xinhua that the Black Stars have failed to impress since appearing at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, and urged Addo to rebuild a formidable team that will win back the hearts of Ghanaians.

"The performance of the Black Stars in recent times has not been impressive. The team kept sinking, and it was good that somebody who was once a Black Stars player had been appointed as the coach. I expect him to take his time to build a strong team for us," said Awudi.

He further urged the government and the Ghana Football Association to give the new manager the required assistance and support.

Fellow fan Dorcas Asamoah urged the Ghanaian authorities to give the new coach ample time to plan for the long term to achieve the desired results.

"Giving short-term contracts to coaches has not helped the Black Stars. I'm excited that Otto Addo has been given a 34-month contract with a further 24-month extension. I think this is good and will enable him to plan for the future," Asamoah emphasized.

"The Black Stars used to play delectable football in times past, and we want Otto Addo to build a solid team that will play real Ghanaian football," he added.

The Ghana Football Association named former international Addo as the country's new coach last Friday. Addo took over from former Brighton & Hove Albion manager Chris Hughton, who was sacked two months ago.

The new manager's first assignment will be to lead Ghana against Nigeria and Uganda in international friendlies this month in Morocco, before two FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic in June. Enditem
