VLADIVOSTOK -- Rescue work is underway to clear the transport slope and restore communications following a rockslide on Monday night that trapped 13 people at the mine in Russia's Far East region, local authorities said on Tuesday.

The accident happened in the Zeya district in the Amur Oblast of Russia's Far East. Efforts to clear the slope and reestablish communication with the trapped miners are underway, said Ilona Sysolyatina, head of the Zeya district. (Russia-Mine Accident)

TOKYO -- The Bank of Japan (BOJ) on Tuesday decided to end its negative interest rate policy in its first rate hike in 17 years, marking a major shift away from the long-running monetary easing that Japan has seen over the past decade to put an end to deflation.

After a two-day policy meeting, the central bank's policy board decided to guide short-term rate to a range of 0 to 0.1 percent, up a fraction from minus 0.1 to 0 percent, judging that its goal of attaining a stable 2 percent inflation is "in sight." (Japan-Central Bank-Rate)

UNITED NATIONS -- A Chinese envoy on Monday called for joint efforts of the international community to promote nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.

ULAN BATOR -- More than 4.7 million head of livestock have perished in Mongolia so far this winter due to extreme wintry weather, known as "dzud," the country's State Emergency Commission (SEC) said Tuesday.
