ADEN, Yemen, March 19 (Xinhua) -- Twelve people were killed and around 20 others remain trapped under rubble after Houthi militants bombed residential houses in Yemen's central province of al-Bayda on Tuesday, according to the Yemeni government.

Yemeni Information Minister Muammar al-Eryani said the bombing led to the collapse of nearby houses, killing at least 12, most of them women and children, with 20 more still buried under the debris, reported the state-run Saba news agency.

He accused the Houthis of adopting a "policy of bombing houses and forcibly displacing their residents as an approach to terrorize citizens" in revenge against opponents of their coup.

He said that "human rights groups had documented the Houthi bombing of 900 residential houses belonging to state leaders, the military, security forces, politicians, media professionals, tribal leaders, and citizens since taking power militarily."

The Houthi group has not yet commented on the incident.

The Houthis have controlled the Yemeni capital Sanaa and most of the country's northern provinces since ousting the internationally recognized government in 2014. Enditem
