UNITED NATIONS, March 19 (Xinhua) -- UN humanitarians said on Tuesday they continue to deliver aid in a tense and volatile Haiti, with schools, hospitals and government buildings under attack.
Many have curtailed operations in the capital of Port-au-Prince. The public electricity company reported on Sunday the destruction of several substations in the capital's metropolitan area, leaving several regions without electricity, said the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
"Despite the tense situation, the United Nations and our humanitarian partners are continuing to deliver aid in Haiti," OCHA said.
The humanitarians said the UN Children's Fund and its partners delivered more than 242,000 gallons of water since early March, while the World Food Programme and its partners provided more than 146,000 hot meals. Humanitarians rendered psychosocial support to the violence-traumatized.
However, the office said the health sector struggles against the lack of medical supplies, health care workers and blood.
"Our humanitarian colleagues tell us that the Bernard Mevs hospital in Port-au-Prince has gradually resumed its activities, thanks to support from the World Health Organization and the Pan American Health Organization in providing medicine and medical equipment," OCHA said, adding that a stock of anesthetic drugs has been provided to two other hospitals in Port-au-Prince.
The humanitarians said the 674-million-U.S.-dollar humanitarian response plan for Haiti increased slowly to a funding level of 6.5 percent.
"This is nowhere near enough to respond to the scale of needs on the ground. We urgently need more support," said the humanitarians. Enditem
