SUVA, March 20 (Xinhua) -- The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued urgent warnings of torrential rain and flash flood across the Pacific island country, with gusty winds expected to accompany heavy downpours and thunderstorms.

According to local media reports on Wednesday, Fiji's National Disaster Management Office is urging Fijians to be on high alert against the adverse weather conditions, citing reports of flooding overnight in areas seeing no floods before.

All schools around the country were closed on Wednesday due to the bad weather, with some turned into evacuation centers, Permanent Secretary of Education Ministry Selina Kuruleca said.

Health Minister Atonio Lalabalavu urged Fijians to prioritize food safety measures such as boiling drinking water and ensuring dry conditions to mitigate the risk of waterborne diseases like typhoid fever.

The Fiji Police Force is also active on the ground. Enditem
