HANOI, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Nearly 70 cases of whooping cough have been reported in Vietnam since the start of 2024, mostly in the country's northern region, the General Department of Preventive Medicine under the Ministry of Health said on Wednesday.

The majority of cases were recorded in capital Hanoi, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa, Yen Bai, Nam Dinh, Phu Tho and Vinh Phuc provinces, Vietnam News Agency reported.

The rainy and humid weather in the northern part of Vietnam has made it easier for viruses to spread and raises the risk of infectious diseases, particularly respiratory illnesses.

The general department has asked localities to collaborate with the Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology and Pasteur Institute to assess whooping cough risks to take timely measures.

Localities must instruct educational establishments, especially kindergartens, to tidy up classrooms and encourage children to wash hands with soap and clean water. Enditem
