SEOUL, March 21 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's export rose in double digits in the first 20 days of this month owing to solid demand for locally-made semiconductors, customs office data showed Thursday.

Outbound shipment advanced 11.2 percent from a year earlier to 34.13 billion U.S. dollars in the March 1-20 period, according to Korea Customs Service.

The daily average export climbed 11.2 percent in the 20-day period. The monthly export kept an upward trend for the fifth consecutive month through February.

Import went down 6.3 percent to 34.84 billion dollars in the 20-day period of March, sending the trade deficit to 711 million dollars.

Semiconductor export soared 46.5 percent to 6.34 billion dollars in the cited period, while those for computers and home appliances expanded in double figures.

Shipment for automobiles and oil products retreated in single digits, but those for steel products, auto parts, mobile devices and precision machinery gained ground.

Import for natural gas, coal, and cars recorded a double-digit reduction in the 20-day period. Enditem
