SEOUL, March 22 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's fish farming production fell in double digits in 2023 due to high water temperature and lower fish demand, statistical office data showed Friday.
The cultured fish amounted to 79,700 tons in the last year, down 12.5 percent compared with the previous year, according to Statistics Korea.
It marked the fastest decrease since relevant data began to be compiled in 2010, recording the lowest in 10 years.
The double-digit fall was attributable to high water temperature, which caused fish deaths, and weaker demand for live fish that stemmed from Japan's dumping of nuclear-contaminated wastewater into the ocean.
In terms of value, the fish farming production retreated 13.0 percent over the year to 1.12 trillion won (834.3 million U.S. dollars) in 2023.
The number of fish farming businesses retreated 1.2 percent to 1,446 last year, but the number of those working in the businesses grew 4.9 percent to 5,300. Enditem
