YANGON, March 22 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar exports about 2,000 tons of coffee annually and this year's exports are expected to remain consistent with that figure, U Myo Aye, chairman of the Myanmar Coffee Association, told Xinhua on Friday.
Between 1,000 and 1,500 tons of coffee is exported to China and Thailand through border trade, and between 500 and 800 tons of coffee is shipped by sea to European countries, Japan and other Asian countries, U Myo Aye said.
The association conducts quality inspections, provides technical training and takes food safety measures to produce high-quality coffee, the chairman said.
Currently, there are approximately 40,000 acres of coffee plantations in Myanmar, annually producing between 8,000 to 10,000 tons of coffee, according to local media.
The Arabica coffee is predominantly grown in Shan state and Mandalay region, while Robusta coffee is mainly cultivated in Kayin state, Ayeyarwady region and Tanintharyi region. Enditem
