DAR ES SALAAM, March 23 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian weather experts have invented information and communications technology (ICT)-based tools to strengthen meteorological data processing and analysis, communication, and product generation, an official said on Saturday.
Ladislaus Chang'a, acting director general of the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA), said in a statement to mark World Meteorological Day that the tools have proved to be very useful in the communication of weather information to key users of meteorological services, including the aviation and marine sectors.
Chang'a said the invented tools include the TMA digital meteorological observatory, the marine meteorological information system, and the meteorological aviation information system.
He said that over the past three years, the government has made significant investments in strengthening the meteorological infrastructure and the provision of climate services across the entire climate services value chain.
The investments include the purchase and installation of weather radars, a calibration laboratory for meteorological equipment, lightning detectors, and high-performance computers for data processing and analysis, as well as capacity building for personnel, Chang'a said.
He said these investments have significantly improved the accuracy of weather and climate forecasting services and early warnings to an average of 80 to 98 percent above the internationally acceptable 70 percent accuracy. Enditem
