JAKARTA -- The joint scientific expedition conducted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Indonesia's National Research and Innovation Agency successfully dived 7,178 meters deep into the Java Trench in the Indian Ocean, setting the deepest dive record for Indonesia, the expedition team said Saturday.

According to the team, this joint expedition ran from Feb. 23 to March 23, with the use of manned deep-sea submersible "Fendouzhe" of the CAS Institute of Deep-Sea Science and Engineering. (Indonesia-China-Ocean Expedition)

NEW DELHI -- The Indian government has extended the ban on the export of onions until further orders, officials said Saturday.

According to a notification issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade on Friday evening, the ban on the export of onions valid till the end of March is extended until further orders.

The move is intended to increase the availability of onions on the domestic market and keep their prices under check. The export of onions was initially banned in December 2023. (India-Onion Export-Ban)

TOKYO -- The number of foreign visitors to Japan rose 89.0 percent in February from a year earlier to about 2.79 million, a record for the month, government data showed.

Arrivals in February rose 7.1 percent from the same month in 2019 when there was no impact from the COVID-19 pandemic, according to data from the Japan National Tourism Organization.

The surge came as the country continued to rebound from the impact of the pandemic, and the Chinese Lunar New Year holidays boosted the number of visitors from Asian nations, the tourism agency said. (Japan-Foreign Visitors-February)

YANGON -- Myanmar has launched an automated cargo clearance system at its border town of Tachilek in eastern Myanmar's Shan state to facilitate trade with neighboring Thailand, the official daily The Global New Light of Myanmar reported on Saturday.

During the launch event on Friday, Deputy Minister for Planning and Finance U Maung Maung Win said that the Myanmar Automated Cargo Clearance System would facilitate faster and more dynamic bilateral trade between Myanmar and Thailand.

According to the Customs Department, the system is also currently operational in Yangon, as well as the Myawady, Muse and Chinshwehaw borders. (Myanmar-Trade-Clearance System) Enditem
