RIO DE JANEIRO, March 24 (Xinhua) -- Argentine manager Gabriel Milito has been appointed head coach of Atletico Mineiro for the next two seasons, the Brazilian Serie A club said on Sunday.

The 43-year-old replaces Luiz Felipe Scolari, who was sacked last week after a poor run of results.

"I'm happy and excited to take charge of Galo, a giant of Brazilian and South American football," Milito said.

"I'm sure we'll do a great job. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Galo on 116 years of history. May there be a lot more success," he added, in relation to the club's anniversary on Monday.

Milito has been out of work since parting ways with Argentinos Juniors last August.

As a player, he was an accomplished center back who represented Independiente, Zaragoza and Barcelona over a 15-year professional career. Milito was also capped 42 times for Argentina's national team and was a member of the Albiceleste squad at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. Enditem
