Malaysia's leading index continues to grow by 3.2 pct in January

KUALA LUMPUR, March 25 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia's leading index continued to grow by 3.2 percent year on year in January, signaling a more encouraging economic performance in the coming months, official data showed Monday.

The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said in a statement that leading index, a tool utilized for predicting economic trends for an average of four to six months ahead, grew to 112 points in January as compared to 108.5 points a year earlier.

This improvement was primarily supported by a sturdy gain in the number of new companies registered and the real import of basic precious and other non-ferrous metals.

Referring to the monthly performance, the leading index was recorded at 1.6 percent in the cited month as against 0.3 percent in the preceding month.

According to the DOSM, the leading index performance indicated a more encouraging economic growth in the near term following a rebound in the external trade.

In view of the current economic situation, the coincident index had continued its positive growth since September 2021 with 124.1 points, compared to 120.2 points in the same month of the previous year.

The increase came as a result of the good performance of all components.

The monthly performance of the coincident index was recorded at 0.2 percent as compared to a negative 0.2 percent in the previous month. Enditem
